Ravencoin’s Consensus Crisis Exposes the Risks of Hash Rate Concentration

Ravencoin is facing one of the most serious incidents in its history after a consensus vulnerability split the network’s transaction history and forced major mining pools to consider rebuilding the chain.

The incident highlights a critical weakness that is often overlooked in proof-of-work networks: having a large amount of hash power does not necessarily make a blockchain more resilient when that hash power is concentrated among a small number of mining pools.

Ravencoin fell to a new all-time low of $0.002754 on Wednesday, roughly 22% below its 24-hour high of $0.003529, according to CoinGecko. Trading volume surged above $18 million during the sell-off before declining to approximately $9.6 million.

At the time of writing, RVN had recovered slightly to around $0.00284.

A Vulnerability That Could Rewrite Recent Transactions

The problem began with a consensus vulnerability that allowed certain nodes to accept invalid blocks.

Ravencoin said the first known exploitation occurred at block height 4,487,776 on Friday. Additional invalid blocks appeared after the vulnerability was demonstrated on the mainnet.

The situation became particularly serious because the affected chain contains valid-looking transactions that could potentially be discarded if the network adopts a different chain history.

Rather than simply fixing the software and moving forward, Ravencoin now faces the possibility of rewriting several days of blockchain history.

Mining Pools Prepare an Alternative Chain

The most significant development involves two mining pools, 2Miners and RavenMiner.

According to Ravencoin, the pools control a majority of the network’s hash rate and are constructing a competing chain that removes the affected branch beginning at the vulnerable block.

If this alternative chain accumulates enough proof-of-work to become dominant, Ravencoin could experience a reorganization covering approximately three days of blockchain history.

That could have serious consequences for users and exchanges.

Transactions confirmed after block 4,487,775 could potentially be reversed. Ravencoin has also warned that affected transactions may not automatically return to the mempool, meaning some users could have to rebroadcast their transactions.

Why This Matters Beyond Ravencoin

The incident demonstrates an important distinction between blockchain immutability and blockchain finality.

A transaction being confirmed on a proof-of-work blockchain does not necessarily mean that it can never be reversed. If the network reorganizes to a chain with more accumulated work, previously confirmed transactions can disappear from the canonical history.

In Ravencoin’s case, the potential reorganization is particularly concerning because it could span multiple days rather than only a handful of blocks.

The episode also raises questions about mining-pool concentration.

Proof-of-work is designed to make it difficult for a single entity to rewrite blockchain history. But when a small number of pools control most of the network’s hash rate, the practical ability to coordinate a chain rewrite can become significantly greater.

Exchanges Move to Protect Users

The uncertainty has already affected the broader market.

Ravencoin recommended that exchanges suspend RVN deposits and withdrawals until the network stabilizes.

Upbit and Bitget subsequently halted RVN transfers, although Upbit continued to allow trading.

For exchanges, suspending transfers is a defensive measure designed to prevent users from depositing or withdrawing coins on a chain that could later be reorganized.

For traders, however, the suspension creates another layer of uncertainty as the market attempts to determine which chain will ultimately become canonical.

The Bigger Lesson for Proof-of-Work Networks

Ravencoin’s crisis is not simply a story about one software vulnerability.

It is a reminder that blockchain security depends on several interconnected layers: consensus rules, node implementations, developer response, mining distribution and exchange infrastructure.

A vulnerability can remain relatively contained if the network has a coordinated response and sufficient decentralization. But when a flaw intersects with concentrated mining power, the consequences can become much more severe.

The most important question for Ravencoin now is therefore not just whether the vulnerability can be patched.

It is whether the network can restore confidence in its transaction history without creating a deeper split between miners, exchanges and users.

For RVN holders, the incident offers a stark reminder: a blockchain can be decentralized in design while still becoming vulnerable when critical infrastructure and hash power are concentrated in the hands of a few participants.
